Lucknow University Student Alleges Caste-Based Assault in Women’s Hostel Over Ambedkar DP

Lucknow University investigates alleged caste-based assault on student Neha Kamle at Bhimrao Ambedkar Women’s Hostel

An incident at Bhimrao Ambedkar Women’s Hostel in the new campus of Lucknow University has sparked outrage among students and activists over alleged caste-based harassment. The incident reportedly occurred on March 26, involving LLB third-year student Neha Kamle. According to reports, Kamle had set Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar’s photo as the display picture (DP) in a hostel WhatsApp group she administered. Following this, she alleges that some other female students entered her room, physically assaulted her, and abused her in casteist terms.

Complaint Filed, Administration Responds

Neha Kamle told the Times of India that she immediately sent a complaint letter to the Provost, Dean of Students Welfare, and the University Proctor. While the Provost and Dean met her, she said she initially received no concrete assistance.

“The attack has left me shocked and unsafe in my own hostel,” Kamle said. She added that she had hoped the university authorities would take swift action.

The university administration took cognizance of the matter, and the investigation committee formed by the Proctor began recording statements on April 2, including testimonies from the victim and the accused students.

Student Protests and Social Media Outrage

The matter drew wider attention after a video of the incident went viral on social media. The Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students Organization (BAPSA) staged a protest outside the Vice Chancellor’s office, demanding immediate action against the perpetrators.

Students and activists expressed concern over caste discrimination on campus. A BAPSA member said, “This is not just about one student. It reflects the larger caste sensitivity issues that universities need to address seriously.”

Safety Concerns and Demands

Despite the investigation, no official announcement has been made regarding disciplinary action against the accused students. Neha Kamle has written directly to the Vice Chancellor, urging strict action and safety measures for herself and other hostel residents.

University sources confirmed that the investigation committee has recorded all statements, but the administration has not issued any press statement. Students continue to demand transparency and safety assurances for all female residents.

“The university must ensure that no student feels unsafe in their own hostel because of caste-based harassment,” a student activist said.
