Maharashtra Govt Forms Panel to Draft ‘Love Jihad’ Law, Citing Rising Forced Conversion Cases

The Maharashtra government, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has formed a special seven-member committee to draft a law against ‘love jihad,’ following the example of Uttar Pradesh.

The committee, headed by the Director General of Police (DGP), will study legal aspects related to interfaith relationships and forced religious conversions. It will review similar laws in other states and submit a report to the government.

A government order said, “Various organisations and citizens have demanded a law to prevent love jihad and forced conversions. This committee will examine the legal framework and address complaints.”

However, Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh criticized the move, saying, “The government claims there are over one lakh cases of ‘love jihad,’ but they haven’t provided any proof. This is just political propaganda.”

Fadnavis had earlier expressed concern over forced conversions, stating, “Many cases have surfaced of girls being lured into marriage and converting. There is demand from all corners for a law against this.”
