A disturbing case of mob violence has emerged from Surajpur in Chhattisgarh, where a man was allegedly beaten, partially tonsured and paraded in public over suspicion of theft.
The incident took place in Pasta village under the Ramanujnagar police station limits and has triggered widespread outrage after videos of the humiliation surfaced on social media.
The victim has been identified as Mohammed Rahman Taj, a 32-year-old resident of Kalyanpur.
Called for ‘settlement’, attacked by mob
According to reports, Rahman was accused by locals of stealing wires from a solar power system. He was allegedly called to the village by local leaders, including the sarpanch’s husband, for a discussion.
Rahman arrived with his wife, expecting a settlement. However, the situation quickly turned violent as a mob gathered and allegedly attacked the couple.
Eyewitness accounts and viral footage show that the mob beat Rahman, shaved part of his head, put a garland of shoes around his neck and paraded him through the village.
“They called us for a meeting, but as soon as we reached, they started beating my husband and humiliating him,” his wife said.
Wife alleges assault and threats
Rahman’s wife also alleged that she was harassed when she tried to intervene.
“They did not spare me either. When I tried to save him, they threatened me and said they would rape me,” she claimed.
The family has denied the theft allegations and said Rahman was targeted without any proof.
Police register case, probe underway
Following the incident, Rahman’s father filed a complaint at the Ramanujnagar police station. Police have confirmed that an investigation has been launched.
“We have received the complaint and are analysing the viral videos to identify those involved,” a police official said, adding that strict action will be taken.
Preliminary inputs suggest that some villagers had earlier suspected Rahman after seeing him in the area, which led to the attack when he returned.
Authorities warn against mob justice
Officials have made it clear that taking the law into one’s own hands is a serious offence.
“Vigilante action is illegal. Those responsible for assault and public humiliation will face strict legal consequences,” a senior officer said.
