On November 6, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the U.S. Presidential election, marking the former president’s return to the White House. In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi expressed his eagerness to renew their collaboration to strengthen the India-U.S. partnership.

Modi’s post read: “Heartiest congratulations my friend @realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory. As you build on the successes of your previous term, I look forward to renewing our collaboration to further strengthen the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership. Together, let’s work for the betterment of our people and to promote global peace, stability and prosperity.”

The relationship between Narendra Modi and Donald Trump has been marked by strong diplomatic ties and visible personal camaraderie. They have shared a mutual admiration, showcased in events such as the “Howdy, Modi!” rally in Houston (2019) and “Namaste Trump” in Ahmedabad (2020), where they addressed large crowds.

Strategically, both leaders have aligned closely on defence and security issues and addressing threats from Pakistan. They also shared a vision for a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” which included collaboration to counter China’s growing influence. This resulted in deeper defence ties, joint military exercises, and India’s prominent role in the Quad alliance with the U.S., Japan, and Australia.

However, trade relations have had their challenges. Trump’s “America First” policy led to disputes over tariffs, with the U.S. imposing tariffs on Indian goods and India responding similarly. Despite these tensions, both nations worked towards achieving fairer trade agreements.

Their cooperation also extended to health during the COVID-19 pandemic, with India supplying hydroxychloroquine to the U.S. and America supporting India’s response to the crisis.
