The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) brought together a packed hall of young minds, political thinkers, and community leaders at CISRS Bhawan, New Delhi, for a thought-provoking discussion on identity politics. The event, titled “Dialogue with Youth: Opportunities and Challenges of Identity Politics,” provided a platform for candid discussions on representation, political engagement, and the evolving role of identity in India’s socio-political landscape, sometimes intense conversation about the realities young people face today.
The discussion featured speakers like Obaidulla Khan Azmi, former MP and Vice President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, reflecting on how identity politics has shaped India’s political landscape over the decades. Zaheer Abbas Rizwi, Vice President of the All India Shia Personal Law Board, highlighted the need for inclusive representation within minority communities. Syed Shahnawaz Ahmad Qadri, socialist and author of Blood Speaks Too, also joined in for a deeper understanding of how identity is manipulated in political narratives.

SDPI’s National General Secretary Elyas Thumbe and National Secretary Faisal Izzudheen called for active political engagement from youth, emphasizing that awareness without action is meaningless. Azhar Thamboli, SDPI Maharashtra State President, highlighted grassroots-level challenges and the need for active participation in governance.
The event saw a highly interactive session where young attendees voiced concerns about political representation, discrimination, and disillusionment with mainstream political narratives. Several participants questioned whether identity-based politics is empowering or divisive. Panelists responded with varied perspectives, acknowledging the complexities while advocating for political literacy and engagement.
The discussion, was moderated by Syed Aleem Ilahi. The occasion highlighted the growing political awareness among youth and their willingness to challenge dominant narratives. While perspectives varied, there was consensus on the need for informed and active participation in political processes.
