UP: Muslim Students in Kanpur Expelled for Wearing Hijab, Told to Join Madrasas

Kanpur Hijab

Three girls of class 12 in the Bilhaur Inter College, Kanpur were asked to remove their hijab by their class teacher upon reaching the college. The incident occurred on 3rd August, Saturday.

The college stated that hijab is a violation of the dress code. The principal said, “The students can wear hijab outside college but not inside the college campus.”

The students protested against their teacher’s mocking remarks, who asked them to join a madrasa instead if they wished to wear hijab inside the college. These remarks led the students to protest at the principal office.

According to the college management, Jyoti, the teacher who made these remarks has admitted her mistake.

Families of the students have called the expulsion ‘unjustly.’ One of the parents said: “Our children were forced to sign a letter and were expelled because they wear hijab.”

Principal Surjeet Yadav stated, “ I asked the students to follow school dress code but on refusal they were made to sign a letter”.

The students, according to him, insisted on keeping their hijab on, eventually their families were called in and were told to sign the letter.
