The Uttar Pradesh government has rolled out a comprehensive initiative aimed at sheltering and safeguarding 12,35,700 cows across the state. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state has prioritized the well-being of cows, ensuring that they receive the necessary protection during the cold wave.
A network of 7,696 shelters has been established across Uttar Pradesh, equipped with essential resources such as tarpaulins, bonfires, fodder, water, and lighting to provide warmth, nourishment, and comfort to these vulnerable animals. The state government is upgrading shelter conditions to prevent any loss of life due to the harsh weather.
By February 25, 2025, the government has set a deadline for completing the construction of durable cow sheds, along with the installation of water and fodder facilities. These shelters will be built according to prescribed standards to ensure safe and comfortable spaces for the cows, with special attention to providing protection from the winter chill.
Routine health checks are being conducted by veterinary officers who are visiting shelters regularly to monitor the health of the cows and provide necessary treatments. District nodal officers are conducting regular inspections to ensure that shelters are well-maintained and adequately stocked with essentials. Any shortages of fodder, water, or lighting are being addressed immediately.
The initiative also includes round-the-clock caretakers stationed at the shelters to ensure the cows receive continuous care and attention, particularly during the cold nights. This ensures that any emergencies can be swiftly addressed, and the cows remain safe and comfortable.
The state government has said that inter-departmental coordination, with departments like the Rural Development Department, works together to expedite the establishment of new cow protection centers. This collaboration aims to provide a safe haven for cows in need of shelter and care.
As part of the broader initiative, the government is also tackling illegal encroachments on pasture lands. By clearing these areas, the government plans to cultivate both perennial and seasonal fodder under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
