Police have arrested a medical officer attached to the Itahar Block Primary Health Center (BPHC) in Uttar Dinajpur district following allegations that a hidden camera was planted inside the nurses’ changing room. The accused, identified as Dr. Biswajit Ghosh, was taken into custody by the Itahar police after a formal written complaint was filed by the nursing staff. The incident has triggered widespread outrage and protests among healthcare workers and local residents.
According to nurses, the matter came to light after on-duty nurses discovered a sophisticated “pen camera” concealed inside their designated dressing room. The staff alleged that the device had likely been operational during the accused doctor’s shifts over the past three weeks to surreptitiously record them. Upon identifying the device, the nurses filed an official written complaint with the hospital administration, demanding immediate intervention.
The discovery led to a tense standoff at the facility, with aggrieved nurses and their family members staging a demonstration outside the office of the Block Medical Officer of Health (BMOH), Dr. Manu Gora. As tensions escalated, a heavy police contingent led by Itahar Police Station Inspector-in-Charge (IC) Abhishek Talukder, along with Block Development Officer (BDO) Dibyendu Sarkar and senior district health officials, rushed to the spot to pacify the agitators.
The situation was brought under control after administrative and health department officials assured the protestors of an immediate and thorough probe. “A formal complaint was received regarding a recording device found in the nurses’ changing room,” said Dr. Apurba Das, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH). “Following orders from the Chief Medical Officer, a departmental inquiry has been initiated alongside the police investigation.”
Following the preliminary administrative inquiry, police arrested Dr. Ghosh and seized the controversial spy pen-camera as evidence. Brief chaos erupted outside the health center when an agitated crowd reportedly surrounded the police vehicle and data-assaulted the accused while he was being escorted to the police station. Police officials stated that the investigation is ongoing to determine if other devices or digital evidence are linked to the accused. Senior officials of the state health department have emphasized that strict departmental and legal action will be taken if the allegations are proven true in court.
