Bangladesh ruling party MP Anwarul Azim was found dead on Wednesday inside a rented apartment in the upscale New Town area on the northeastern fringes of Kolkata.
The Kolkata police have stated that they are investigating claims that Azim, an Awami League MP, may have been murdered. Azim had come to India on May 12 for medical treatment and had been missing for the past few days.
Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has called the MP’s death a “planned murder,” and the Bangladesh Police have already arrested three Bangladeshi nationals in connection with the case.
The incident came to light when Gopal Biswas, a friend of the deceased in Kolkata, was contacted by Azim’s daughter after she failed to reach her father. Biswas then filed a missing person complaint at the Bidhannagar Police Station.
Akhilesh Chaturvedi, IG CID, stated that based on reliable inputs, there is a possibility that Anwarul Azim was murdered. Chaturvedi added that the police had no prior knowledge of the MP’s arrival in the city and only became aware after the missing person complaint was filed on May 18.
According to reports, several people, including women, had visited the apartment where Azim was staying. The police are examining all possible angles to solve the case but have refrained from commenting on the statements made by the Bangladesh Home Minister.
