A pall of grief and outrage has descended over Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district after a 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered. The minor’s body was discovered on Sunday morning in a field just 200 metres from her residence in Galwanpora village. The horrific crime has sparked widespread protests across the Valley, with citizens and political leaders demanding swift and exemplary justice.

The Disappearance and Grim Discovery

According to police, the child left her home around 4 PM on Saturday to attend her religious class, carrying a copy of the Quran. When she did not return by evening, her family grew frantic with worry. A missing person complaint was lodged at Police Station Budgam around 10 PM the same night. Police immediately registered an FIR and launched a massive search operation through the night.

The heartbreaking discovery came around 7:15 AM on Sunday. The girl’s body was found at a spot barely 200 metres from her home. The Quran she was carrying was also recovered nearby. Senior Superintendent of Police Budgam, Hariprasad K K, addressed the media with grim findings. “All medico-legal formalities were subsequently completed and prima facie, it appears to be a case of rape and murder,” he stated. The officer confirmed that relevant sections of the law, including those pertaining to sexual assault and murder, have been added to the FIR.

Special Investigation Team Formed

To ensure a swift and thorough probe, the police have constituted a Special Investigation Team under the supervision of DySP Headquarters Budgam, Sajad Ahmad. SSP Hariprasad assured the public that the SIT is examining all possible angles to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the brutal crime. “The investigation will be conducted in a fair, transparent, and professional manner,” he said, urging people not to circulate unverified information or speculate, as such actions could hamper the investigation.

Chief Minister and Leaders Express Outrage

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah strongly condemned the brutal murder, describing the incident as “shocking and deeply distressing.” He expressed profound grief and conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family. “May she find place in Jannat,” the Chief Minister said.

In a message that resonated across the region, Abdullah called for deep societal introspection. “While the appropriate agencies enquire into the circumstances of her murder, it’s also fitting that we reflect on where we as a society are headed when our young children are not safe,” he said. He added, “I condemn this brutal attack without reservation or condition and send my sympathies to her family.” The Chief Minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring exemplary punishment for those found guilty.

Education Minister Sakeena Yatoo visited the grief-stricken family personally. “I visited the family today, their pain is distressing, and the entire neighbourhood remains in shock,” she said. “If such incidents continue to happen, how can we claim that our girls and women are safe in society?” She urged police authorities to conduct a swift inquiry.

Valley Unites in Grief and Anger

The crime has united political and religious leaders across party lines in condemnation. PDP chief and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti posted, “Devastated to hear about the cold blooded murder of a 12 year old girl in Budgam. The allegations of rape just make it all the more shocking, disconcerting and unsettling. One shudders at the thought if our children are really safe.”

Peoples Conference president Sajad Lone demanded the strictest punishment under the law, while Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari said, “Only a beast could commit such a heinous act. Those involved must face the harshest punishment, and justice must be delivered without delay.”

Hurriyat Conference chairman and cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said the circumstances have shaken the conscience of every human being. “What are we becoming as a society if our children cannot even feel safe on their way to seek education and guidance? Such incidents spread fear, grief and deep anxiety among people and demand serious introspection at every level,” he said. He demanded a thorough, transparent, and time-bound investigation.

Local residents described the incident as horrific and deeply disturbing. An elderly villager voiced the community’s anguish, “The killer should be caught immediately. We just want justice for the girl.” As the SIT races to track down the perpetrators, the Valley mourns an innocent life lost to unspeakable brutality.
