Indian Army Says ‘India Does Not Forget’ as Pahalgam Attack Anniversary Nears

Ahead of the Pahalgam attack anniversary, the Indian Army issues a strong warning as security is heightened across Jammu and Kashmir.

Ahead of the first anniversary of the Pahalgam attack, the Indian Army on Tuesday issued a “strong warning against terrorism”, saying any violation of “the boundaries of humanity” would be met with firm action.

In a post on X, the Army said, “When boundaries of humanity are crossed, the response is decisive. Justice is served. India stands united.” The message was accompanied by a visual referencing Operation Sindoor, stating, “Some boundaries should never be crossed. India does not forget.”

The statement comes as the country prepares to mark one year since the deadly attack in Baisaran meadow that killed 26 people, including tourists and a local pony operator.

Operation Sindoor and India’s Response

Following the attack on April 22, 2025, Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor on the night of May 6-7.

During the operation, Indian forces carried out coordinated strikes on Pakistan. Officials said the strikes targeted bases linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.

According to official claims, more than 100 militants, including trainers and handlers, were killed. Authorities said the operation was aimed at causing maximum damage to terror infrastructure while minimizing civilian casualties.

Security Heightened Across Jammu and Kashmir

Security has been significantly increased across Jammu and Kashmir ahead of the anniversary. Officials said senior officers are holding meetings to finalise security plans, especially for tourist hubs, religious places, and key installations.

An official said all agencies have been asked to remain alert to prevent any untoward incident. Surveillance has been strengthened, and security forces have increased their presence in vulnerable areas.

A QR code-based identification system has also been introduced for tourism service providers in Pahalgam. This system allows tourists and security personnel to verify the identity and background of service providers like pony operators and vendors.

Tourism Hit, Baisaran Still Closed

The attack has had a lasting impact on tourism in Pahalgam, once one of Kashmir’s busiest tourist destinations. The famous Baisaran meadow, often called “Mini Switzerland,” remains closed even after a year.

While many tourist spots have reopened after security audits, officials say reopening Baisaran requires more preparation. “We are not fully ready on the ground. Proper security arrangements are needed before reopening,” a police officer told reporters.

Local businesses continue to suffer due to restrictions and reduced tourist flow. A tourism official said only around four lakh visitors came to Pahalgam in the past year, compared to the usual 12 to 15 lakh.

Hoteliers and pony operators say the closure of key routes and destinations has made travel inconvenient. “Tourists keep asking if Baisaran is open. Many leave disappointed when they find it closed,” said a local pony operator.

Locals Hope for Revival

Despite the challenges, some signs of recovery are emerging. Tour operators say they are receiving fresh inquiries and bookings, though visitors remain cautious.

A tourist from Delhi said, “We were nervous before coming, but the beauty of this place made us feel at ease.”

Local stakeholders believe reopening Baisaran will be crucial for restoring tourism. “Every visitor wants to see the meadow. Its reopening will benefit everyone,” said a tourism representative.
