Varanasi Police Register FIRs Against Eight Individuals for Sharing ‘Misleading Social Media Posts’ on Manikarnika Ghat

Varanasi Police File 8 FIRs Over AI Images at Manikarnika

In Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, eight FIRs have been registered following the circulation of allegedly AI-generated images and misleading social media posts about the ongoing redevelopment work at Manikarnika Ghat, police officials said. Authorities claimed the visuals misrepresented the project, distorted images of Hindu deities, and were intended to hurt religious sentiments, spread misinformation, and create public unrest.

The FIRs target eight individuals and several X handles accused of sharing fabricated content. The complaint was lodged at Chowk police station by a resident of Tamil Nadu whose company has been overseeing the beautification and improvement of cremation-related facilities at the historic ghat since November 2025. Police said the posts, shared on the night of January 16, misled devotees and attracted objectionable comments and reposts, escalating tensions online.

Varanasi’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, Gaurav Bansal, said, “By spreading false and misleading information, attempts were made not only to hurt religious sentiments but also to create an anti-government mindset in society. Legal action is being taken against the users and those who reposted or commented on the content. A detailed investigation is underway.”

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the redevelopment work in Varanasi as “unprecedented,” claiming projects worth over ₹55,000 crore have been implemented. He warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to mislead the public through social media.

Reacting to the FIRs, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav posted on X, questioning the narrative, “Can you go to the ghats of Varanasi and say this, looking the people of Varanasi in the eye? This isn’t a question, it’s a challenge. Unfortunate!”
