A Delhi court has acquitted human rights activist Shifa Ur Rahman due to insufficient evidence in connection with the 2019 violence in the Jamia Nagar area. Rahman, along with 14 others, was involved in a larger conspiracy case related to the Delhi riots but was cleared by the court after it found no substantial evidence to support the charges against him. Rahman had been accused of mobilizing student protests against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which critics argued discriminates against Muslims.
Shifa Ur Rahman, along with Mohammad Adil, Ruhul Amin, Mohammad Jamal, Mohammad Umar, Mohammad Shahil, and others, were acquitted due to lack of evidence. These individuals were accused of involvement in the larger conspiracy behind the Delhi riots.
Shifa Ur Rahman, a 48-year-old activist, was arrested by the Delhi police in April 2020 for allegedly organizing protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which critics claimed discriminates against Muslims. In the 2020 Delhi riots, 53 people, mostly Muslims, were killed. Rahman later contested the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections in February 2020 as a candidate for AIMIM, securing third place, but lost by a margin of 49,385 votes to Amanatullah Khan.
The court described Sharjeel Imam as the “mastermind” behind the violence. It stated that Imam not only provoked one community but was also part of a larger conspiracy to incite violence in several northern states. His speeches were said to have led to widespread anger, hatred, and disruption.
