Akhtar Ansari, a resident of Katamkulli in Ranchi, lost his life after allegedly being beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of goat theft on July 7th. According to locals, the incident unfolded late at night when a mob confronted Ansari, demanding to know his identity before launching a brutal assault.
“Akhtar had gone to a wedding around 8 pm. Later, around 2 am, his nephew received a chilling call demanding money or threatening to harm Akhtar,” said a local resident. “On the call, they heard Akhtar screaming for help while the mob beat him severely,” he added, noting that the mob then allegedly moved his body to another village after the assault.
In their bid for justice, Ansari’s family reached out to the authorities, contacting the Namkum police station, only to be redirected to Tatisilve where the case had been transferred.
“The authorities initially assured them that Akhtar was safe, but his body was discovered hours later,” said a local, expressing dismay. “A DSP later visited to ‘rectify their mistake’,” he added.
Akhtar’s lifeless body was eventually found in Tatisilve the following Sunday, prompting shock and outrage throughout the community. Many locals have denounced the allegations of goat theft as baseless, demanding and fair action against those responsible for the lynching.
