In Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, a Dalit woman was allegedly tied to a tree and brutally beaten after her son married a girl from another caste. The girl’s family, belonging to the Backward Classes (BC) community, disapproved of the inter-caste marriage.
The incident occurred in Kalakunta village of Pedda Kadubur Mandal. K. Govindamma, the mother of the groom, had left the village with the newly married couple, anticipating backlash from the girl’s family. After staying away for six months, Govindamma returned to the village a few days ago.
Upon hearing of her return, the girl’s family and relatives stormed her house on Thursday evening. They dragged her outside, tied her to a tree, and thrashed her. Shockingly, they also tried to marry her off to a mentally unstable man.
Villagers alerted the police, who arrived in time to rescue Govindamma. The incident came to light on Saturday, and the police have since registered a case.
