The Biden administration reaffirmed India’s status as a vital strategic partner of the United States, asserting that the nature of the relationship is expected to endure despite recent critiques. US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller addressed concerns raised during a press conference on Monday regarding the US-India relationship, particularly in light of critical articles and opinion pieces preceding the Lok Sabha elections in India.

In response to questions regarding alleged democratic backsliding in India and recent statements by the State Department concerning perceived crackdowns on opposition, Miller underscored India’s significance as the world’s largest democracy and emphasized its pivotal role as an important strategic partner of the United States. He expressed confidence in the continuity of this partnership.

Recent pronouncements by US officials have consistently emphasized India’s status as a “very important partner,” highlighting the ongoing growth and development of the bilateral relationship. However, despite the generally positive trajectory, there have been instances of tension, notably following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Official State Visit to the White House last year.

Issues such as the Sikh separatist movement in the US and statements by the State Department concerning the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have contributed to unease in the bilateral relationship. India has vehemently objected to certain remarks from the State Department.
