A report published by UNICEF Yuwaah and iDreamCareer on Thursday stated that Boys in India have more accessibility when it comes to careers and less than 10% students make use of or are aware of career guidance programmes.
The report was based on a survey that was conducted for five months (August to December 2023). The students came from 25 different states.
The second addition of the Bharat Career Aspiration Report 2024 (BCAR) mainly focuses on aspiration potential career awareness and accessibility of career counselling among secondary and higher secondary students from low-income families.
Formed by UNICEF Yuwaah is a platform that aims to guide youth in careers, develop skills and increase employment by creating entrepreneurs. iDreamCareer is said to be India’s No.1 platform for professional career counselling.
The report revealed that out of 4,968 student participants of the survey from classes 9-12, only 9.36% (465 out of 4,968) received services through career guidance programs.
Career awareness was calculated mainly at two levels- Basic and advanced. Out of which, boys showed better access to career-related information.
“When it comes to basic and advanced career awareness levels among female and male participants the report reveals that boys tend to have better access to career-related information as they move up in higher education”, the report stated.
Government services and defence services were the top career choices for both genders while female students preferred medical science and teaching, male students generally preferred engineering and technology. In vocational careers (Out of 704 respondents, 56.25 %) female students opted for beauty and wellness after defence and government services whereas, male students preferred government and defence services as well as sports and fitness.
