A 29-year-old man, identified as Daud Sk from Hausnagar village of Samsherganj police station in Murshidabad, died under suspicious circumstances at Jangipur sub-jail. The deceased’s family has raised concerns, alleging foul play and alleging their son was murdered.
On Sunday, April 7, Samsherganj police arrested Daud Sk from the Dakbangla More area on National Highway 12. He was then held as an undertrial prisoner in Jangipur sub-jail. Daud allegedly died in jail on Saturday, April 13, and was buried the following day, April 14.
Mainul Seikh, the deceased’s father, said, “They killed my son.”
The deceased’s elder brother, Bani Israel, told The Observer Post, “The police would sometimes take him away. On Saturday, we received news that my brother had died in jail. There are marks around his neck. We suspect foul play. We have requested an inquiry into the matter.”
The family demands exemplary punishment for the sub-jail authorities and claims that the police refused to register their complaint when approached.
The police did not provide any explanation for his arrest. Jailer Samir Roy of Jangipur sub-jail commented, “The death is under investigation. I cannot provide further details at this time.”
On Saturday, a delegation from Jamaat-e-Islami Hind and the Human Rights Organization APCR visited Dawood Sheikh’s family, extending financial assistance.
APCR representative Ziaul Ansari stated, “Our organization’s convener and lawyer Khurshid Alam has already submitted a petition to the Human Rights Commission. We are pursuing legal action.”
